DON’T GET CAUGHT OUT THIS CHRISTMAS

The Australian Border Force (ABF) is urging people to be aware of the types of goods that cannot be imported into Australia before they begin shopping online for Christmas gifts overseas.
Commander Customs Compliance Border Management, Erin Dale, encouraged shoppers to check the rules before they buy online.
"At this time of year, the volume of international mail and cargo increases quite substantially as Australians shop online for Christmas presents," Commander Dale said.
"People can help us and help themselves by not ordering gifts such as laser pointers, BB guns or novelty shock devices.
"These gifts could end up costing you more than you think. Attempting to import prohibited items means you'll lose your money, lose your gift and you could face a fine or charges."
The easiest way for shoppers to check what can and cannot be imported is to go online to border.gov.au and click on 'Buying Online' on the homepage.
Commander Dale also reminded shoppers that ABF officers may screen, x-ray or examine parcels before they are delivered.
"This is to ensure the goods they contain are allowed into Australia and do not pose a risk to the community.
"Many goods which are legal for purchase in some countries are restricted here and cannot be imported into Australia without a permit," Commander Dale said.
To avoid the possible disappointment of having goods seized, and the risk of penalties, shoppers are urged to check the border.gov.au website before purchasing gifts online from overseas.
