The container ship ASL Bauhinia was abandoned in the Red Sea on Tuesday after a fire broke out. All crew members were safely rescued.
The 1,930-TEU vessel, built in 2022, was en route from Jebel Ali to Aqaba via the Suez Canal when the incident occurred approximately 226 km northwest of Yemen.
Security sources suggest the fire may have been caused by an explosion due to hazardous cargo. However, the Shanghai-based manager of the vessel, AS Line, are yet to comment on this incident.
Although the region has experienced attacks over the past few year, no links have been established between this fire and terrorist activities.
The incident comes as sea freight shipping services are returning in the region following the Israel-Hamas ceasefire.
